This table reflects the age structure of Sociology staff, of whom nearly half were in their 30s in 1977. The early retirement schemes in the 1980s naturally affected the age structure as well as total numbers; the UGC Review of Sociology showed that by 1988 more than half of all remaining Sociology staff were in their 40s.
