Peter Halfpenny is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Centre for Applied Social Research (CASR) at the University of Manchester. His main research interests are the philosophy and sociology of science, science policy, and charitable giving. Recent publications in these three areas are Positivist Sociology and its Critics, 3 volumes, Edward Elgar, 1994 (co-edited with P. McMylor); Survey of Research Equipment in United Kingdom Universities, London: CVCP, 1996 (co-authored with L. Georghiou, M. Nedeva, J. Evans and S.
