Biographical Note

R. David Smith took his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto and completed graduate work at both the University of Stockholm and the University of Toronto where he obtained his PhD in sociology. His area of doctoral studies was in Canadian health care policy. The current study of Status Inconsistency grew out of an earlier interest in analyzing the health-related consequences of social conditions. Since completing his doctorate he has taught at several universities in Canada and Japan. Several years ago he became interested in advances in chaos and complexity theory and how they might be of both practical and theoretical value to social scientists. He is currently completing a book on this topic. His other areas of interest include the bases of social legitimacy and the problems involved in cross-cultural and comparative sociology.
