Call for New Editors

Sociological Research Online (http://www.socresonline.org.uk/) is seeking two new Editors for Volumes 21, 22 and 23 and 24 (February 2016 - November 2019).

Sociological Research Online has an international reputation as a major journal of record in sociology, a steady flow of submissions, rapid publication and worldwide readership. The challenge is to enhance the reputation of the journal while continuing to develop innovations that will increase its value to the international sociological community.

As an electronic journal, editorial operations are conducted entirely through email and the web, supported by software that simplifies the management of articles through the publication process. This means that the editors could be located anywhere where internet links are fast and reliable. Applications are invited from pairs of editors who may or may not be located in the same institution.

The Editors are supported by a Managing Editor, based in the editorial office at the University of Surrey, who handles the more routine matters and also deals with the 'electronic' side of the journal publication process. The Editors' main responsibilities are to encourage the submission of articles for the General Section, coordinating the peer review process, commissioning Special Section collection of papers and developing the editorial policy of the journal. The Editors will be assisted by the journal's Editorial Board (currently chaired by Henrietta O'Connor, University of Leicester, UK) and are members of the journal's Management Board (chaired by Nigel Gilbert, University of Surrey, UK).

Editing an electronic journal is in many ways similar to editing a traditional paper journal, but without the delays inherent in a paper-based system and with more opportunities for innovation. The new Editors will work alongside the current Editors until February 2016 to ensure that the journal is properly supported during the transition period.

Applications for the role of Editor should be made to socres@surrey.ac.uk by 1st June 2015, and are invited from either individuals or prospective editorial teams. The application should include a brief statement of why you are interested in the post and a two page CV, the latter mentioning any previous experience in editing academic journals and your publication record. The post is honorary and for four years.

For informal enquiries about the role, please contact the current editors, Rachel Brooks and Paul Hodkinson, by email via the editorial office: socres@surrey.ac.uk.
