Clare Holdsworth is a Lecturer in Population Geography in the Department of Geography, University of Liverpool. Previously she was a Simon Research Fellow at the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research at the University of Manchester. Her current research interests focus on young people's transitions throughout Europe, particularly family formation in Spain.

Jane Elliott is a lecturer in Sociology at the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work Studies in the University of Liverpool. Previously she was a Research Fellow at the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research at the University of Manchester. Her research interests include how women combine work and family life with a particular emphasis on the use of longitudinal data and event history techniques to explore the inter-relations between different 'careers'.

William Housley and Richard Fitzgerald
William Housley completed his ESRC sponsored doctoral research on decision making practices within multidisciplinary social / care work teams. His interests are in contemporary social theory, discourse / conversation analysis, the sociology of expertise and professional groups, decision making and public / social policy. He currently teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in contemporary social theory, discourse / conversation analysis and qualitative methodology in the newly formed Cardiff School of Social Sciences at the University of Cardiff. He is a member of the BSA and recently contributed to the successful BSA summer school for people undertaking Doctoral research in sociology held at Cardiff University during September 1999. He is currently pursuing research into a number of areas including policy discussion and debate within the media.

I reside in the Department of Sociology at the University of Southern Colorado, and am at work on a book that explores the relationship between poverty and the principles vs. practices of democracy.
Marilyn Porter
Marilyn Porter was born in North Wales, and educated in England and Ireland, passing through History, Political Science and Education, before settling into Sociology and Women's Studies. She has taught for the last 21 years at Memorial University, Newfoundland, Canada, has done research in UK, Newfoundland and Indonesia, and has been active in the women's movement in UK, Canada and in the 'global' women's movement, active around the UN and other international fora.
