Les Back

Les Back is a sociologist working at Goldsmiths, University of London. His main fields of interest are the sociology of racism, popular culture and city life. His last book was entitled The Art of Listening (Berg 2007) and he is currently completing an online book called The Academic about the politics of education presented in a diary form which will be published in October 2009. He also writes for newspapers and magazines on topics ranging from football and music to politics and higher education and he has been involved in making documentary films.

Maggie Tate

Maggie is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Sociology. She is interested in qualitative methods, visual studies, and urban sociology in relation to the topics of race, gender, culture, surveillance and inequality. Her current research looks at the changing conditions of homelessness in Austin produced by the “cleaning up” of the downtown urban core.
