Brigitte Nerlich and Nelya Koteyko

Brigitte Nerlich

Brigitte Nerlich is Professor of Science, Language, and Society at the Institute for Science and Society, at the University of Nottingham. She studied French and philosophy in Germany, where she did her PhD in French linguistics. After three years as a Junior Research Fellow in general linguistics at the University of Oxford she moved to Nottingham, where she has previously worked in the schools of linguistics and psychology. Her current research focuses on the cultural and political contexts in which metaphors are used in the public and scientific debates about cloning, GM food, the human genome project, foot and mouth disease and, most recently, avian influenza. She has written books and articles on the history of linguistics, semantic change, metaphor, metonymy, polysemy and, more recently, the social study of science and technology.

Nelya Koteyko

Dr Nelya Koteyko is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Science and Society, University of Nottingham. She has been working on two ESRC funded projects looking at discourses of infection and hygiene ('Talking cleanliness in health and agriculture') and health and immunity ('Enlisting the help of friendly bacteria: Probiotics and visions of health, nutrition and science in a modern world'). Her research interests include media representations of health and illness and the relationship between corpus and discourse studies, and she published on the application of corpus linguistics to issues in discourse analysis and language description.
